    Lately I’ve noticed many friends proudly posting pictures of their home-grown fruits, vegetables and herbs  on social media. The size and variety of these “crops” are amazing, and often produced in a small raised planter along the side of their home. As a child, I remember a time when families planted their front yards with fruits and vegetables. During World War II these were called “Victory Gardens” and produced about 40 percent of our Nation’s fresh vegetables. It was reported that there were over 20 million home gardens throughout the Nation. Sadly, after the war ended, landscaping changed from home gardens to well-manicured lawns and bright flower beds. An epidemic curve has a relatively predictable upslope and once the peak is reached, the back slope can also be predicted. We have robust data from the outbreaks in China and Italy, that shows the backside of the mortality curve declines slowly, with deaths persisting for months.
